Adding another comment on a already made comment

If we select an underlined text, we can't add a comment or re-underline it.

Would be useful, e.g. to indicate that the learner doesn't know what the correction should be; also, if the learner deletes the underlined text (e.g. using delete/backspace key, or select the text and press backspace/delete), any new text is not underlined anymore.

Tyler puts his corrections (to the red underlines) in brackets in the text. It seems to work well, except that @VictoriaDemierbe can't comment on them because they remained underlined. Thus either they need to not be underlined, or it needs to be possible to comment on an underlined text. It might still be a good idea to add a thumbs-up reaction to both messages and comments in order for the student to quickly acknowledge them without disrupting the flow of the conversation.

I think adding a comment on another comment/signal might generate more confusion than clarity. I'd go toward a "reply to" button that could allow one to react to a message or a correction/feedback if more discussion is needed.

OR, if we realize that this is not enough, then we would need to rethink entirely the feedback system with a kind of separate thread/sidebar for commenting and replying to comment (similar to commenting on a Word/Google Docs document -> separate from the doc itself).

I see what you mean with comment-on-comment; indeed, that could in theory end up with a comment stack that gets out of control.

I do think it would be particularly useful to be able to comment on an underline – so, for example, if Victoria underlines something (in red), and I don't know what the correct form is, then I could still add a comment to ask what the error is. She could then reply or send a separate message explaining the error.

That said, the sidebar idea is interesting – like you say, something like commenting on a Word doc. I think that would help to make comments/edits more visible and easier to find, and it would keep the chat more organized, avoiding 'interruptions' for meta feedback.
