OK, so that's actually an intended behaviour: the red marker indicates that the person is not viewing the chat window yet. However, we can discuss whether this is the most logical/expected behaviour or not, whether it should be clarified (red = not seeing the conversation, does not mean "not connected to LL") or changed entirely.
Serge Bibauwchanged title from Red dot at the beginning of the chat to Red dot understood as "not connected" rather than "not in this conversation"

Blue (I'd suggest blue, or eventually yellow, i.e., a "non-problematic/alert" colour): connected, but not seeing the conversation (BUT do we even need that? maybe too intrusive? too much pressure on the person? -> also possible simply not showing if the person is not in the convo)
Red: not connected to LL
Add overlays (title="" tag, right?) with a basic explanation
My instinct here is to use a yellow or orange dot indicating 'away', as this is commonly used in other chat systems (and so would be more recognizable to the user).
I think there is utility to this idea – it assures the user (whether student or tutor) that the other person is still connected but just not in the conversation. So, for example, if the user doesn't get a message back straight away but sees an orange dot, they know the other is still connected (i.e. isn't experiencing connectivity issues or hasn't left the conversation completely).
